Endemic to the lowland and hill forests of the West Papuan islands of Waigeo, Batanta, Gemien, and Saonek in Indonesia, the red bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea rubra) males have a glossy red plumage, emerald green face, and elongated, black, wire-like tail feathers. The females are less brightly coloured, primarily sporting brown and buff plumage. Also called the cendrawasih merah, they live in the lowland rainforests of the Raja Ampat Islands, particularly Waigeo, Batanta, and Gemien.
