The black brant or Pacific brent goose (Branta bernicla nigricans) is a relatively small goose, with dark brown upper-parts and brown-barred, pale grey underparts. The western race, known as the Black Brant, is darker overall. It breeds in coastal Alaska and the Canadian Arctic and winters along the Pacific coasts south to California – some birds fly 3,000 miles from their nesting grounds.
