The thrashers were named in honour of their foraging behaviours, where they use their long bills to "thrash" through dirt or dead leaves in search of insects. All of these birds eat insects and several species also eat berries. There are 14 species: Bendire's thrasher, Brown thrasher, California thrasher, Crissal thrasher, Curve-billed thrasher, Grey thrasher, LeConte's thrasher, Long-billed thrasher, Ocellated thrasher, Pearly-eyed thrasher, Sage thrasher, Scaly-breasted thrasher, White-breasted thrasher – and Cozumel thrasher which is possibly extinct.
