The European honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus) is a medium-sized raptor that raids the nests of bees and wasps – but for the insects themselves, not the honey. Also known as the pern or common pern, it nests throughout Europe and migrates to tropical Africa for European winters. The majority of the estimated 160,000 pairs can be found in Russia. There are six species of honey buzzards, which are distributed across the globe.
