The Pompadour cotinga (Xipholena punicea) is named after Madame de Pompadour, the celebrated mistress of King Louis XV of France in the 18th century. The bird's vibrant plumage, particularly the male's bright burgundy and plum feathers with white wings, was thought to resemble the fashionable colours associated with her. Females are more pale and grey. Found in the Amazonian rainforest, it has a range that extends across the Amazon Basin and includes Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, and the Guianas. The males perform elaborate mating displays, chasing each other to showcase their white wings, while the females raise the young alone.
