The noisy miner (Manorina melanocephala) is a native Australian honeyeater, often confused with the introduced Common Myna, which actually belongs to the starling family. The name possibly origtinates from colonial settlers who thought the distinctive dark feathers framing the bird's eyes and face made it look like a worker who had just surfaced from a blackened coal mine. They live in large, highly social colonies and communicate constantly using an immense, repetitive range of screeching alarm calls, warnings, and chattering to defend their territory from intruders. They are found in eastern and south-eastern Australia.
