The American black bear (Ursus americanus), native to North America, is the continent's smallest and most widely distributed bear – and is also the world's most common bear. It has short, non-retractable claws that gives it an excellent tree-climbing ability. Eastern populations are usually black while western black bears can show brown, cinnamon, and blond colours as well as black.
