Endemic to the Philippines, the coleto (Sarcops calvus) is a starling with bare, pink skin on its head and black underparts and wings, a look that gives it its distinctive "bald" appearance and helps it stay cool. Also known as the Bald Starling, the common name "coleto" likely originates from the Spanish word coleto, referring to the European green woodpecker. The scientific name Sarcops calvus is derived from the Greek sarx (flesh) and ōps (face), combined with the Latin calvus (bald), describing its bald, fleshy face. A fairly large bird of forest canopy and more open wooded areas in the mountains, it is often seen on exposed snags.
