The paradise tanager (Tangara chilensis) name reflects the bird's vibrant, multi-coloured plumage, which is considered reminiscent of a paradise-like vision. It has a bright green head, sky blue underparts, black upper body, and either yellow and red or all red rump, depending on the subspecies. It is found in the Amazon rainforest and is often seen in groups and sometimes associating with other species. Its scientific name, Tangara chilensis, while including "chilensis," is misleading as the bird is not found in Chile. The Tangara part of the name comes from the Tupi language, meaning dancer or someone who skips and turns.
