One of the two subspecies of the Snow Goose – named for its typically white plumage – the Lesser Snow Goose (Chen caerulescens caerulescens) has two 'colour phases', a white one and a blue-grey one, the latter being called the 'Blue Goose'. These phases are not regarded as subspecies, but merely as examples of dimorphism. The smaller subspecies - the other subspecies is the Greater Snow Goose – The lesser snow goose breeds in the Arctic and usually migrates to California and Japan.
