The black-tailed skimmer (Orthetrum cancellatum) flies swift and low, skimming the water surface. With age, adult males develop extensive blue pruinescence (a frosted or dusty-looking coating) on their abdomen, offset by yellow lateral patches. Immature males and females are unmistakable, being mostly yellow with black vertical stripes. Widespread in Europe and Asia.
