The long-legged Long-toed Lapwing (Vanellus crassirostris) has long toes which helps it navigate and forage on floating vegetation, feeding on aquatic insects and other invertebrates. Also known as the long-toed plover, it is found in central and eastern Africa from Chad and South Sudan in the north to Mozambique in the southeast. It prefers wetlands, including marshes, swamps, floodplains, and areas with floating vegetation like water hyacinth where, unlike other lapwings, it can spread its weight on floating vegetation while hunting.
