The red-tailed laughingthrush (Trochalopteron milnei), named for its bright red tail, is shy and unwilling to stray far from cover. Found in China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam, it is strictly montane, usually living at an elevation of 1,800–2,500 metres (5,900–8,200 ft) above sea level. It mainly feeds on seeds and small fruits, but will also take some insects.
