The black-winged lapwing (Vanellus melanopterus ) can be distinguished by its prominent white wingbar, which is visible in flight, bordered by black remiges (wing primary feathers). Also known as the greater black-winged lapwing, it is found from the Ethiopian highlands in the north to central Kenya (Vanellus melanopterus melanopterus) and again at middle to coastal elevations in eastern South Africa (Vanellus melanopterus minor). It breeds at highland inland areas in the summer, and moves down to the coast for the winter.
