The endemic California Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor hirsute) is named after its favourite plant Pipevine Aristolochia – a USA-native deciduous climbing vine prized for its large heart shaped foliage & fascinating flowers. A subspecies of the pipevine swallowtail, it is black with hindwings that have iridescent green-blue colouring above and a row of red spots below. This subspecies is smaller and hairier than the main species.
