The Moluccan King Parrot (Alisterus amboinensis) is named after the Moluccas (also known as the Maluku Islands), an archipelago in eastern Indonesia where the bird is endemic. It is also known as the Amboina King Parrot. A vividly coloured bird, it features a brilliant red head and chest, deep green wings, and an iridescent dark blue back and tail. It is one of the few parrot species where males and females look almost exactly identical. Yet despite their vibrancy, they are remarkably quiet, shy, and inconspicuous, often hiding in the lower and middle tiers of the tree canopy.
