The black eared kite (Milvus migrans lineatus) – named for the dark patch behind the eye – is not, as yet, recognised as a separate species. It is also known as the Eastern Black Kite. It shows an extensive amount of white on the outer underwing primaries, with distinctive barring on the inner primaries. 'Western' Black Kites have very little white, if any at all, and the underwing appears quite dark, with indistinct barring on the inner primaries and reduced white bases to the outer primaries.
