The common redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus), or often simply redstart, has an orange-red tail, from which it and other redstarts get their names – "start" is an old word for "tail". The distinctive male has a black face and throat with a white brow, a bright orange breast, and a blue-grey back. The female can be distinguished from the female Black Redstart by its warmer, buffy-brown rather than greyish breast.
