The eclectus parrot (Eclectus roratus) is one of the only birds you can sex by just looking at them. The name eclectus originates from the scientific name, Eclectus, which comes from the Greek word eklektos, meaning chosen or selected, and relates to the bird's "eclectic" and distinct appearance. The name refers to the drastically different appearance between the sexes – the green males and the red and blue females – which was so extreme that they were originally classified as two separate species. Eclectus parrots are native to the rainforests of New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, northeastern Australia, and the Maluku Islands where they inhabit the forest canopy and nest in tree hollows, feeding on fruits, nuts, and seeds.
