The endemic Australian pink-eared duck (Malacorhynchus membranaceus) is named for its distinctive pink ear patch which is only visible during breeding season. It has a brown back and crown, black and white barred sides, and a black eye patch on an otherwise white face, making the seldom-used Australian name of zebra duck more appropriate. It is highly nomadic, often appearing in large numbers in newly flooded areas, and forms life-long pair bonds, unusual for ducks.
