The endemic New Zealand scaup (Aythya novaeseelandiae), also known as the black teal (or pāpango and several other names in Māori), is New Zealand's only true freshwater diving duck. It is also the sole scaup species found in the entire Southern Hemisphere. Males feature striking yellow irises and dark plumage glossed with an iridescent green and blue sheen. Females have brown irises and a duller, browner appearance. They live in freshwater lakes, ponds, and slow rivers, across both the North Island and South Island.
