The dik-dik antelope (Madoqua kirkii) name comes from the unusual alarm call that the female commonly makes, which sounds like a wheezing and whistling “zik-zik” or “dik-dik”. Early settlers and hunters named them as they ruined the hunter’s chances of shooting any larger game thanks to their alarm calls. This small but long-legged antelope is shy and elusive, concealing itself in brush most of the time.
