The cardinal woodpecker (Dendropicos fuscescens), the smallest of the woodpecker species, is named for the red of a Roman Catholic Cardinal's robe which is visible on the male. The male has a red hind crown and nape, the female has a dark hind crown and black nape. The Cardinal woodpecker is native to tropical parts of western and central Africa.
