The Silver Gull (Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae) is named for the pale silver-grey plumage on its back and wings. It also has a striking bright red bill. Found across Australia, New Zealand, and New Caledonia, locals call them "seagulls," but they are rarely found far from land and prefer coastal or inland watered habitats as they are successful scavengers. They have flexible, unhinging jaws that allow them to swallow remarkably large food items whole. Juveniles display starkly different black beaks, black eyes, and blackish legs.
