Endemic to Australia and southern New Guinea, the Bush Thick-knee (Burhinus grallarius) or Bush Stone-curlew, is a nocturnal, ground-dwelling bird, known for its large yellow eyes and long legs that give it a distinct "thick-knee" appearance. It has big eyes and long legs, with dark streaks over the buff and greyish white feathers of the upperparts and spotted markings on the wings. Also known as the Bush stone-curlew, it breeds throughout spring and summer, putting on an elaborate courtship dance involving standing with its wings outstretched, stamping its feet up and down, and keeping the tail upright. It camouflages by freezing and flattening itself during the day, preying at night on insects, lizards, and small vertebrates.
