The elusive Green Hairstreak (Callophrys rubi) is a small, fairly shy butterfly that spends most of its time perched on vegetation or sunbathing. Adults fly in the spring, between April and June. It holds its wings closed, except in flight, showing only the green underside with its faint white streak. The only green butterfly species in the UK, the green hairstreak is similar to Sheridan's green hairstreak butterfly which is found in North America. There are different variations of hairstreaks including white-letter hairstreak, brown hairstreak, meadow brown hairstreak, and black hairstreak among others.
