Endemic to Ethiopia, the Abyssinian catbird or juniper babbler (Parophasma galinieri) is one of the finest songsters in Africa with the loud ringing song of the male offset by the purring response of the female. Catbirds are named because of their wailing calls, which resemble a cat's meowing. Abyssinian catbird's distinctive markings are the orange-red eyes surrounded by black and its orangish or chestnut-coloured belly and undertail coverts. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical dry forests, where it is very difficult to see.
