The ruddy duck (Oxyura jamaicensis) is a duck from North America and one of the stiff-tailed ducks – it has a seemingly oversized tail that it habitually holds upright. The genus name is derived from Ancient Greek oxus, "sharp", and oura, "tail", and jamaicensis is Jamaica. The male is cinnamon with a black crown, large, white cheek-patch, and bright blue bill. The female is mottled grey overall with black on the top of her head and a dark, horizontal line that bisects her white cheek.
