The woodland grasshopper (Omocestus rufipes) is a short-horned grasshopper belonging to subfamily Gomphocerinae. The Latin species name rufipes means red-footed, from rufus (red) + pes (foot), referrring to the colour of the legs. The traffic-light coloured underside of the abdomen has a green, yellow and red sequence running from front to back. Females are brownish with a greenish upper surface whereas males are darker but always have a red tip to the abdomen. It is present in most of Europe, in the eastern Palearctic realm, in North Africa, and in the Near East.
