The wild Brazilian guinea pigs (Cavia aperea) (preá in Portuguese) are the ancestors of pet guinea pigs, thriving in South American grasslands. Their brownish-agouti fur provides excellent camouflage in their grassland homes, where they create complex networks of tunnels and pathways in dense vegetation. They are found in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela.
