The scaly-sided merganser or Chinese merganser (Mergus squamatus) is named for the scaled dark pattern on the flanks and rump. The female has a reddish head. A sleek, secretive diving duck with a bright orange-red bill and a long, shaggy crest, it needs clean water to survive. This endangered bird lives in Manchuria and extreme Southeast Siberia, breeding mostly in the Russian Far East, with small numbers in North Korea and North-east China.
