The Ethiopian Wolf (Canis simensis), also called the Red Fox, is the rarest canid on the surface of the planet, and the only representative of the wolf family in Africa. Endemic to Ethiopia and Eritrea, the largest population is in the Bale Mountains, Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Wolf is different from other wolves in that it has a longer muzzle and smaller teeth. Though it lives in family groups, it hunts alone which sets this wolf apart from other wolves which hunt larger prey in groups. It preys on rodents ranging in size from hares to the Giant Mole Rat to that of the common grass rats. It is also known as the Simien jackal; Abyssinian wolf; Simien fox; Ethiopian jackal.
