The rock pigeon (Columba livia ) is named because true wild birds nest on cliffs and in caves. Although it was originally native from Europe to North Africa and India, it now lives mainly in cities all over the world. In places it has reverted to wild habits, nesting on cliffs far from cities. Its plumage varies – some are identical to wild-type birds, but can be completely black, white, or orangey-brown and any combination in between.
