Endemic to Madagascan rainforests, the red-bellied lemur (Eulemur rubriventer) has a luxuriant chestnut brown coat and a reddish belly in males – females have a darker greyish-brown coat with a creamy-white or reddish belly. They are medium-sized, with long, bushy tails for balance, and possess dexterous hands with opposable thumbs and hind feet for agile climbing. Red-bellied lemurs inhabit the eastern coastal mountainous rainforests from lowlands to high altitudes where they forage for fruit, supplemented by flowers, leaves, and occasional insects.
