The straw-necked ibis (Threskiornis spinicollis) is named for its straw-coloured, stiff feathers located on the neck and breast of adult birds. These plumes are particularly prominent in the breeding season as they are used during courtship displays. Unlike their notorious relative, the Australian White Ibis, the Straw-necked Ibis avoids cities, refuse tips, and garbage, preferring natural pastures and wetlands where they perform massive pest control for agriculture, gathering in giant flocks to feast on plagues of grasshoppers, locusts, and crickets. It is primarily found throughout mainland Australia, with populations also extending into New Guinea, Indonesia, and nearby islands.
