The banded orange heliconian (Dryadula phaetusa), banded orange, or orange tiger, is native from Brazil to central Mexico. The male is bright orange with thick black stripes – the female is a duller orange with fuzzier black stripes. The vertical lines on the wings are an example of disruptive patterning. This breaks up the outline of the butterfly to make it difficult for birds and other predators to see and catch it.
