The rare and endangered Meller's duck (Anas melleri) is named after Charles James Meller, a British botanist who worked in southern Africa and collected the first specimens of this duck. The Meller's duck resembles a large female mallard – it is a brown duck native to eastern Madagascar, known for its plain plumage, blue-grey bill, and large size. Primarily found in freshwater wetlands and rainforests, Meller's ducks are highly territorial, especially during breeding season, and form strong pair bonds.
