Coues' white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is named after Elliott Ladd Coues, an American army surgeon, historian, ornithologist, and author who led surveys of the Arizona Territory. Found in North America, Central America, and South America, the North America species is widely distributed east of the Rocky Mountains as well as in southwestern Arizona and most of Mexico, except Lower California.
