The elephant hawk moth (Deilephila elpenor) name is derived from the caterpillar's resemblance to an elephant's trunk. Also known as the large elephant hawk moth, it is a pretty, gold-and-pink moth that can be seen at dusk in gardens, parks, woods and grassy habitats. It is most common in central Europe and is distributed throughout the Palearctic region.
