The Galapagos sea lion (Zalophus wollebaeki) is the largest endemic land animal in the archipelago – but is also the smallest sea lion species. Slightly smaller than their Californian relatives, some breeding colonies also occur on Isla de la Plata, Ecuador. They are one of two types of seal found in Galapagos (the Galapagos Fur Seal is the other) and are part of the eared seal family – having external ear pinnae. Males have a prominent bump on their forehead and can weigh up to four times more than females.
