Native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, the green iguana (Iguana iguana) can actually range from earthy green to bright orange, lavender, and even blue as juveniles. They possess a parietal eye on the top of their head which cannot form clear images but is highly sensitive to light changes and helps them detect predatory birds flying overhead. Their long tail accounts for half of their body length and can be whipped to ward off predators or detached if caught. They spend their lives in tree canopies near water, routinely diving from heights of up to 40 feet into streams to escape danger. They can hold their breath underwater for up to four hours.
