Maximilian's Parrot (Pionus maximiliani) is named after Prince Alexander Philipp Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (23 September 1782 – 3 February 1867), a German explorer, ethnologist and naturalist. He led a pioneering expedition to southeast Brazil between 1815–1817. Also known as the Scaly-headed parrot, it is found in eastern Brazil, central and eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. It is found in a wide range of wooded habitats, from humid subtropical forest to arid Caatinga. Pionus is a genus of medium-sized parrots native to Mexico, and Central and South America. Characteristic of the genus are the chunky body, bare eye ring (which can vary in colour), and short square tail.
