The small Masked Finch (Poephila personata) is named for its distinctive black mask. Found in the dry savannahs of northern Australia, it builds domed nests from grasses, lining them with fine grass, feathers, and even charcoal. The female tends to be slightly smaller than the male, and the male black mask extends back from the beak to a greater extent than the female. During the dry season, large numbers of Masked Finches may gather around water sources, sometimes forming flocks of thousands. Masked finches engage in unique courtship rituals involving song and dance. Males exhibit vibrant plumage while displaying for females, often accompanied by specific calls to attract mates.
