The Slate-crowned Antpitta (Grallaricula nana) is found in Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist mountain forests. Antpittas are secretive, wary and shy birds that inhabit the dark understory of dense mountain forests. They never stray far from cover. Like others of its genus, Slate-crowned Antpitta is usually shy and difficult to observe. They feed on insects on or near the ground including ants. Up to eight subspecies have been recognised.
