The chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) is one of the most common and widespread domestic animals, there are more chickens in the world than any other species of bird. It is estimated that more than 50 billion chickens are reared annually. In the UK and Ireland adult male chickens over the age of 12 months are primarily known as cocks, whereas in America, Australia and Canada they are more commonly called roosters.
