The Alpine ibex (Capra ibex), is an Alpine goat with horns that curve backwards over its head and powerful, muscular frames on spindly legs. Males are larger and carry longer horns than females – horns get as long as 5 feet. Also known as the steinbock and bouquetin, it tends to live near the snow line in the mountains of the European Alps across Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Austria at elevations up to 3,300 m (10,800 ft). It is remarkably agile – hooves act like suction cups helping it to grip rocky terrain. There are 6 species of Ibex in total, which include the Alpine Ibex, the Nubian Ibex, the Walia Ibex, Spanish or Iberian Ibex, the Asiatic or Siberian Ibex and the Wild Goat which is also known as the West Asian Ibex.
