The non-venomous Indian python (Python molurus) might be found on the ground or dangling from a tree branch, resting or waiting to ambush prey, camouflaged well by its markings. It is territorial, preferring to settle in and “claim” a favourite roosting site. The rock python is a constrictor, squeezes its prey to suffocate and immobilize it before slowly swallowing. It is solitary, seeking companionship only during breeding season and only from a mate. Also known as black-tailed python, Indian python, and Asian rock python, it is native to India, southern Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and probably in the north of Myanmar. Pythons are the most ancient type of snake. All pythons have spurs – tiny projections where their ancestors might once have had legs.
