The red-knobbed coot (Fulica cristata) is named because, in the breeding season, the adults have two small reddish horns. In non-breeding plumage, it is difficult to separate from the Eurasian Coot – though the bill is blueish rather than pinkish. A member of the rail and crake bird family, Rallidae, it is a resident breeder across much of Africa and in southernmost Spain on freshwater lakes and ponds.
