The gregarious guira cuckoo (Guira guira) is named because Güirá means "bird" in Guarani, one of the official languages of Paraguay. It is found widely in open and semi-open habitats of northeastern, eastern and southern Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, and northeastern Argentina. Some cuckoo species lay their eggs in other bird nests, but the Guira is known to take over nests of other birds – and even share a nest and incubate with close relatives. Known in Spanish as the pirincho, it is not a particularly adept flier, and usually flies only for short distances. Guira cuckoos will perch and roost together, huddling together when it is cold.
