The austral parakeet, austral conure, or emerald parakeet (Enicognathus ferrugineus) name Austral derives from the word "austral," which means "southern," because it is the most southerly distributed parrot species in the world – found in the southernmost regions of the Americas including Tierra del Fuego. Its habitat is primarily the temperate forests of southern Chile and Argentina, particularly those dominated by southern beech (Nothofagus) and Araucaria araucana forests.
